Two series of work, one dip pen and ink drawings, the other paper collages
inspired by 2 visits to the Outer Hebrides during June and July 2014.
Initially travelling to South Uist in June with artist Susan Bryson for a Commonwealth Games textiles project with Iochar school, then returning
to the Outer Hebrides in July via a fabulous flight onto Barra's iconic beach
on a great Scottish summers day. Travelling north to Lewis & Harris, via Eriskay,
the Uists, Benbecula and Berneraray by public transport ; post bus, school bus,
ferries and hitching journeys with friendly tradesfolk, and some sea kayaking too!).
The dip pen and ink sketchbook drawing series began on the first journey and was added to on the following visit. The sketchbook is concertina pull out style so that I could make my composions as long or short as I wanted. It's been a long whilst since I have sat in the landscape drawing. Wonderful.
The paper collage series are on seven inch square watercolour paper painted with prochain dyes, raw pigment, black ink and gloss paint. They were made on return from Outer Hebrides in August but hadnt quite finalised them until now.
I surprised myself by making these wee pieces. I painted sheets of watercolour paper with prochain dyes to try and capture the intense colours of the Hebridean landscape and became absorbed with sculpting the silhouettes of the landscape with my scissors...
